Southend Wargames Club

(The One and Only Southend Wargames Club)

About the Club

Southend Wargames Club started life as an offshoot from S E Essex Military Society which was, itself, once called Southend Wargames Club. The fledgling club met at Shoeburyness and was initially named after that locale. Gradually, the membership grew and the club flourished but suddenly found itself having to leave its premises as the school at which it met became a youth centre and eventually required the space occupied by the club.

Several attempts were made to find a new home and, after one or two false starts, the club found itself back in Southend. Naturally, it once more became Southend Wargames Club and continued in its new home for some years.

Sadly, as frequently happens, there was a falling out between various of the members and a parting of the ways was decided upon. One group, retaining the Southend name, reloctaed itself to Eastwood and the group that remained became known as SSWG. Following the departure of Bill Ray, the member at whose house the club met, there was yet another move, this time to nearby Rayleigh - where the club meets today. Comprising around 10 members, the club has the good fortune (thanks to its new host) to be able to leave games set up for its Thursday meetings and so can play quite large battles through to a conclusion.
