Hi all

as you know i love attending our thursday night swareys, and am always impressed at the breadth of games and periods we play. That said, I would love to piece together a campaign for us to play over the course of a year, which we can return or leave when ever we feel like it.

Seeing as we play most periods, fronts and arms I think it would be fun to play a campaign where by we can play various games which all contribute to the outcome of things. For example. a WW2 campaign where we can play a naval engagement which dictate the game conditions of a land offensive that we may choose to play next etc etc. That is a very basic example of what I mean, but i hope you get my meaning. We could also split into distinct teams for the campaign and designate an over all commander.

So, I throw the gauntlet down for the big brains amoung us to come up with some ideas to discuss on this forum. I think this would stretch us a little more than normal. What do you say chaps??

We have attempted several campaigns in the past and the only one I can say was truly successful was a short, simple WW2 effort arranged by Bill Ray based on the Crete landings and airborne invasion. I think Roger may have some details of how it was structured.

I attempted something rather more complex for the 7 Years War, based on an Island kingdom which had been split into about 6 principalities where the Princes were vying for control of the whole kingdom. We got some way into the map campaign but it proved impossible to maintain interest. I suspect the necessity to prepare moves away from the club so that they could be implemented at the next meeting was too much of an imposition on peoples' time and the necessary campaign rules to account for various aspects of movement, treaties and stuff didn't appeal.

Like you, I'd love to be involved in a campaign but I fear we may have an uphill struggle with anything other than a limited operation involving little management beyond what happens in an evening's gaming.

I ran a Napoleonic campaign, based on Napoleon's invasion of Britain, when we were Shoebury W C and this was generally liked by the participants (who included most of our current members) but was pretty well ruined by Andy Finch. I still have most of the "equipment" needed to do it again if there is enough interest.

Cheers,

Mike
